William Wyler's The Letter (1940) is an entertaining film noir set in an exotic location-Singapore, based on a short story by Somerset Maugham. Bette Davis is the femme fatale-a bored wife of a rubber plantation manager who seemingly kills a neighbor in self defense. It gets more complicated as the case moves forward-from an open and shut case to serious doubts.
