I had the day off and decided to make a pilgrimage to Shibamata, the fictional home of Tora-san (Kiyoshi Atsumi). It is a traditional neighbor hood in the northwest part of Tokyo near Chiba prefecture. Tora-san was a beloved film character in which 48 films were made with him as the star. Usually two year for the major holidays the summer oban (ancestor worship) season and the New Year's holiday at the end of the year.So far I’ve seen 40. There is a statue honoring Tora-san at the station.
Tora's fictional sister Sakura (Chieko Baisho) is also honored at the station.
The traditional shopping street much like the one seen in the films.
Toraya, the sweets shop that his family runs that he periodically returns to.
Fried rice for lunch at Toraya.
The local temple that features in the films.
Tora-san Museum.
Locations of the films.
The riverside, another popular film location.
