Yoji Yamada's 34th installment in the Tora-san series, Tora-san's Forbidden Love (1984), doesn't exactly break new ground, but it does highlight the work culture that created the excesses of the "bubble" economy. The pre-credits dream sequence lampoons the 1984 release of Godzilla Returns with Shochiku's monster Girar as a stand int he for the monster. Dr. Kuruma saves the world from the monster as usual. In this film Tora (Kiyomi Atsumi) meets overworked and overburdened Tominaga (Masakane Yonekura) from Mazurezaki, Kagoshima at a yakitori shop and they become fast friends. One night Tominaga brings Tora to his home in Ibakragi and there he meets Tominaga's wife Fujiko (Rie Ohara). When Tominaga goes on the run Tora tries to help Fujiko track him down in Kagoshima. As usual Tora falls for the Fujiko, but the results are predictable.
