I finally got around to watching Laura Greenfield's documentary The Queen Of Versailles (2012), since it was referenced in a book I've been reading. And, wow, what a film. To me it's an indictment of all that is wrong in America, the excesses of late capitalism and wasteful practices of the haves. Jackie Siegel is the surgically enhanced, spray tanned trophy wife and mother of 8 children of time-share mogul David Siegel, 30 years her senior. They live in a ludicrous 26,000 foot house and plan to move into a 90,000 replica of Versailles, but the 2008 Lehman shock occurs and they are sent spiraling downward in their fortunes. It a "riches to rags" story that leaves you with little empathy for the hubris of such people who have drivers and an army of domestic help to get them through the day. It feels like a reality TV shows-"Lifestyles of Rich in Decline." It is about people who lack substance and value material possessions over everything. It is a catalogue of what's wrong with America today.
