I recently saw Russian director Mikail Kalatozov's The Cranes Are Flying and was inspired to look into his filmography and saw that he made The Red Tent (1969), an attic adventure story staring Sean Connery with a sound track from Ennio Morricone. This was too good to pass up-a Russian-Italian co-production, the first for the USSR.. It has some startling cinematography as well as some eye candy with Claudia Cardinale as the love interest of one of the explorers. It is based on a true story of an Italian expedition to the North Pole led by Umberto Nobile (Peter Finch) which goes bad when their airship crashes and they are stranded they dye the canvas red and camp hoping for rescue. A rescue mission is led by Roald Admunsen (Sean Connery) who died during the ultimately successful expedition.
