In retrospect Fred Zinneman's Julia (1977) comes off as an Oscar-bait film. It is the supposedly true-life tale of Lillian Hellman's (Jane Fonda) undercover delivering of money to Germany to help Jews and other political enemies escape from the Nazis via her friend Julia's (Vanessa Redgrave) contacts in the resistance. Jason Robards picked up an Oscar as the gruff Dashielle Hamett-Hellman's real-life partner. The veracity of this story, which was first a memoir has been called into question. I would have settled for a bio pic about Hellman and Hammett.
