Alfonso Cuaron's latest and perhaps, most personal film, Roma (2018) is also one of the year's best. The title is derived from the Colonia Roma neighborhood where Cuaron grew up. The story is something of a paean to his youth in the early 70s and his affectionate relationship with the family's indigenous domestic worker, here played by Yalizta Aparicio (Cleo). It is a intimate domestic portrait the is filmed with precision and great artistry. This time Cuaron acted as his own cinematography and the result is impressive. That being said, there are some epic set pieces throughout the film as well. Such as the mass martial arts demonstration that Cleo witnesses as she tries to track down the father of her unborn child who is among the participants. These practitioners will be seen later in an impressive scene where Cleo and her employers go downtown during a demonstration to buy a crib for Cleo's unborn baby when they get caught in the middle of what was to be known as the 1971 Corpus Christi massacre- where some 120 were gunned own in the protest. There are also some impressive shots of the family on vacation near he sea in Tuxan near Vera Cruz. It is another masterpiece from Cuaron.
