Samuel Fuller's film noir The Crimson Kimono (1959) is notable for its positive and realistic portrayal of Japanese Americans. There is a romantic triangle between army buddies, cops, and roommates Charlie (Glenn Corbett) and Joe (James Shigeta) and the object of their affection, a college artist and murder investigation witness Chris (Victoria Shaw). Much of the action takes place downtown LA in "Little Tokyo" and "Chinatown"-giving the on location film noir flavor to the film. The plot revolves around the participants in creating a geisha-themed burlesque stage act for Sugar Torch (Gloria Pall), who killed. The hunt for the killer culminates in a chase through a parade in Little Tokyo. Fuller is always fun, he’s not interested in subtlety-he always gives something extra to these pulp films-in this case the exotic niesei and Asian-American community in LA.
