Michael Haneke has built a career out of disturbing films and The Piano Teacher (2001) is no exception. It is the disquieting story of a masochistic piano instructor, played with steely resolve by Isabelle Huppert, who has a whole host of issues, including a love-hate relationship with her overbearing mother. It was a big hit at the Cannes festival the year it was released winning all the major awards. While I admire the film, I can't say that I enjoyed it. It was hard for me to understand why the young strapping hockey AND piano playing stud would jump through so many hoops for a clearly disturbed woman. I also admire the ambiguous ending as well-very Haneke in execution. He always gives you something to think about.
