Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927) is a silent era masterpiece and a defining moment in science fiction films. It is an epic that is supremely cinematic-there are so many memorable scenes from the two and a half hour filled with thousands of extras. It has been cited as a prime example of German expressionism that stands out for its primitive but effective special effects.
