I have been a fan of David Chang's now defunct food based periodical, Lucky Peach, so I was predisposed to liking his new Netflix documentary series on food, Ugly Delicious. The first season has eight episodes: 1. Pizza, 2. Tacos, 3. Homecooking, 4. Shrimp and Crawfish, 5. BBQ, 6. Fried Chicken, 7. Fried Rice, 8. Stuffed. He often has celebrity guests, chefs, and friends join him in his adventures. Some episodes give historical backgrounds about the foods discussed. He ends up in some interesting places on occasion as well. For example, in the first episode he lands in Tokyo to eat at two of the better known pizza restaurants in Tokyo-Seirinkan and Savoy. In the fried chicken episode he goes to Seattle-I thought he was going to Ezelle's Chicken, but instead goes to Salare, a restaurant owned by an African American chef who does duck confit rather than fried chicken. In BBQ, predictably he goes to the American south but also back to Tokyo for yakitori at Masakichi, a Michelin Gourmet Bib restaurant in suburban Meguro that I have also visited. It was an informative and interesting look at contemporary food culture, I hope more seasons are upcoming.

Pretty sure the guy in the photo is a friend of ours Taichi from Kappo Tamura. Salare is near our old house in Ravenna. It used to be the Pied Piper when we took you there in the past. Same guy opened Junebaby in Ravenna.
