I didn't know much about Earnest Hemingway's third wife Martha Gelhorn until Philip Kaufman's film about the couple, Hemingway & Gelhorn (2012) came out. She was an internationally respected war correspondent that was at the forefront of most of the major wars of the 20th century. I finally got around to watching it, and although it is the kind of film I like-based on historical events and historical people-it felt overlong. Perhaps it had focused on just the Spanish Civil War when they met it would have had more focus. Hats off to Kaufman for inserting characters into archival news reel footage and the use of it throughout the film. Both lead performances, Clive Owen as "Papa" Hemingway and Nicole Kidman as Gelhorn were effective. I also enjoyed the scenes set in Havana where the couple lived for a time. Hemingway & Gelhorn seemed like a larger than life couple.
