Alexander Payne's latest film, Downsizing (2017) is something of a departure since it relies on some special effects and bells and whistles to tell it's story. Most of his previous films are small human stories, but int his one a future where people reduce their size to live large (more luxury for less money) and save the environment, but even in this economy there are winners and losers. On another level it is a simple love story as well. The second half of the film was far less interesting than the first for me-the second half deals with the history of the "downsizing movement" as well as future environmental problems of the earth. Matt Damon is the hapless husband whose wife decides she cannot go through with the procedure and divorce him creating problems with the luxuries future he had envisioned. Interesting but not as memorable as other Payne productions (Election, Sideways, etc.).
