I read Mark Harris' book, Five Came Back (2014), and enjoyed how it combined two of my favorite interests: film and world history. So when I heard that Nexflix had made a documentary about the book I was eager to see it. In some ways I enjoyed the documentary about the wartime exploits of the five Hollywood directors (John Ford, John Huston, Frank Capra, William Wyler, and George Stevens) who volunteered their services to the U.S. military in WWII. One of the aspects of the book I found tedious was the administrative paper trail of orders and what not that was a major part of the recounting of the story historically. In addition, the viewer gets to see clips of the director's films before and after the war-as well as little seen excerpts from the films they made for the military. It also includes commentary form a variety of directors such as Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Kasdan, Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Greengrass, and Guillermo del Toro. It was narrated by Meryl Streep. It was an informative and entertaining three episode miniseries.
