I'm wondering if I watched the wrong version of The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), I didn't realize that there was an earlier version from 1934. It was single out in the Hitchcock / Truffant documentary, but they may have been referring to the earlier film, starring Peter Lorre, which was the one that gave Hitchcock exposure outside of England for the first time. This film set in the exotic Morocco starring James Cagney and Doris Day as an American couple who stumble into an assassination plot while on holiday. I find the casting predictable and not a little vanilla-but I guess Hitchcock knew his audience-the film has it s strong points, but some critics have suggested he failed to improve on the original version. I guess I'll have to see it and compare for myslef.
