Rodney Ascher's documentary Room 237 (2012) on Stanley Kubrick's The Shining was a really fascinating film. It inspired me to go back and watch the film after seeing it. Some of the film theories discussed in Ascher's film are more compelling than others, but overall they provide insight in to what Kubrick was trying to say beyond the surface story from Stephen King's novel-the film departs from the book in several ways that make it less an adaptation than an original work of art in Kubrick's hands.
