Kiyoshi Kurosawa cut his teeth on horror films like Cure, so when he does a conventional drama like Tokyo Sonata or Journey To The Shore (2015), it seems like an anomaly. But perhaps,Kurosawa is trying to expand his repertoire of films. This film is about a woman, Mizuki (Eri Fukusatsu), who is visited by her dead husband, Yusuke (Tadanobu Asano), who takes her on a journey to the people and ghosts that helped him on his journey back to her. He helps these people come to terms with their issues and ultimately helps Mizuki move on with her life. It is a strange story in the sense that it leaves many issues unresolved-we learn that Yusuke has committed suicide but not why. He has had an affair and she confronts the other woman who is is now pregnant by her own husband. I don't see where the closure comes...perhaps it is the acceptance of the idea that life can be messy without fulfilling conclusions. It is a bit overlong, but there is some great cinematography in the rural locations they visit through out the film.
