Woody Allen's latest film Cafe Society (2016) may be his best film since Crimes and Misdemeanors. It is certainly one of his most philosophically dense since then. It is a comedy at heart, but it has moments of philosophical contemplation in it as characters contemplate the meaning of life as well as the after life. This is not to say that some of it comes off as trite in the sense that Allen is trying to create aspects of the 30s film culture that he idealizes as well as making some sort of statement about the shallowness of the Hollywood film culture and society. I guess it was merely a matter of time before nebbish Jesse Esienberg became an Allen protagonist-Kirsten Stewart exudes charm and charisma as the one that got away. I was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed this film.
