Todd Hayes film Carol (2015) was one of the most highly lauded films of 2015 for good reason. It is a subtle look at a controversial issue (a homosexual relationship) based on a novel by the Patrica Highsmith. The success of the film revolves around the two leads: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Hayes does an excellent job of evoking the period gone by with the details of the 1950s era in the character's wardrobes, hairstyles, cars, buildings, and interior designs in the film. The cinematography by Edward Lachman is exquisite in its framing. It is deserving of all the awards and attention garnered in an era where big budget comic films seem to be the norm-it's nice to see a little character picture like this capture the attention of film goers.
