I decided to watch Jennifer Kent's well received horror film The Babadook (2014) to put me in the mood for Halloween. It was an unusual film in that it was as much about grief parenting fatigue than a haunted spirit. It's a fairly simple and self-enclosed story with a small cast about a woman, played with conviction by Essie Davis, slowly losing over her hyperactive child (Noah Wiseman). It does seem as if some new ground was broken in which they don't really defeat the evil spirit as much as learn to live with it.
