I have heard good things about the Izu Islands that are actually a part of the city of Tokyo, so when friends suggested a trip to Izu Oshima Island, I jumped at it.
These were my travel companions-Aussies, the whole lot-Jonny, Dale, and MJR. After arriving early on Saturday morning after tackling an all-night ferry we rode around the volcanic island-52 km, and at one stretch 6 km of relentless uphill climbing. The onsen after was well-deserved.
Lunch was hiyashi chuka, a traditional summer favorite-a cold noodle dish.
The rotemburo (outdoor hot spring) near the guesthouse.
Homage to Godzilla, the 1985 film was filmed on the island.
Dinner at our guesthouse-fresh sashimi, rice, miso soup, pickles and salad.
Sunday's lunch, a spicy pork rice bowl with miso soup.
My souvenir for myself was a bottle of Gojinka No Shiroi, a shochu distilled on the island. Ironically, I couldn't find any at the local supermarket and ended up drinking Moriwaka shochu, which is distilled on Kozusjhoma, and seems to be the favorite of the seven islands.
