Cronos (1993) was written and directed by Mexican Guillermo del Toro, his first film at the age of 29. It is a very original and competent horror story. An antiques dealer Jesus Gris (Frederico Luppi) stumbles upon a medieval mystical life extending device. It's existence comes to the attention of a wealthy, dying industrialist (played by Luis Bunuel favorite Claudio Brook). He sends his thuggish nephew (Ron Perlman who was to become a del Toro favorite in his latter films), to attain it for him. Gris refuses and a game of cat and mouse ensues and the film takes a strange turn at the end of the film, which places it firmly in the horror genre. It was a novel and entertaining film from a director who would see the culmination of his talents in the impressive Pan's Labyrinth.
