Hirokazu Kore-eda's third film Nobady Knows (2004) was inspired by real life events and Yuya Yagira won the Best Actor award at the 2004 Cannes Festival. Kore-eda moves on from his previous themes of memory and loss to focus on the resilience of children left to their own devices. It is a bittersweet story of four children with different fathers of a mother (played by pop star You) who routinely leaves them for weeks and months at a time while she pursues romantic interests on her own. She is th epitome of selfishness paired with naivety. The film follows the children over time as they cope on their own and have moments of joy and reflect the resilience that children possess. It is a powerful film and the child actors are excellent in this ensemble cast. No matter how dire this film seems, the real-life story from which it was conceived is much darker and disturbing.
