The Rover (2014) is Australian director David Michod's impressive follow up to the critically acclaimed Animal Kingdom (which was a bit of a disappointment to me given the hype). However, this film surpasses it in most cinematic areas. First of all, the performances by the two lead actors, a feral looking Guy Pearce as Eric and an almost unrecognizable Robert Pattison as Rey. These two men form an uneasy alliance as Eric takes Rey with him to recover his stolen car amidst a post apocalyptic future in the Australian outback that serves almost as another character in its epic openness and rugged terrain that resembles another planet. The film and the story is bleak, relentless, violent, and sparse. It's probably not the kind of film for your average film goer who might find it slow or monotonous, but I found it compulsively watchable.
