The House of Sand (2005) by Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington joins the ranks of evocative films that use sand as a character as much as a location (see Teshigahara's Woman in the Dunes and Bertolucci's The Sheltering Sky). This films is about mothers and daughters, survival, the passage of time, and has two very powerful performances from the female leads who play multiple generational roles in the film: Fernanda Montenagro and Fernanda Torres. It is a visually and emotionally powerful film.
