One of the highlights of this excursion was walking the famous Naksenko trail-it was really beautiful. The first kilometer was pretty tough as it was steep, but it got much easier after that. I have a friend who is planning to walk the whole thing and write a book about it-you can read some blog posts about it here at his blog: Notes from the Nog: "Nakasendo".
Nothing says summer in Japan like green rice fields and cicada.
A bear bell, luckily I didn't see any, but I did encounter a snake, ewww....
Very lush. It must have been mushi-atsui!

Yes, I was very sweaty the whole time. Especially the first kilometer or so, which was mostly up hill.

What trail maps did you use and where did you get them from?

Warwick, I didn't use trail maps. It was a well-marked trail on this section of the Nakasendo trail.
