Paul Thomas Anderson's film The Master (2012) is a curious film. It seems epic on film making levels: amazing cinematography, artistically framed shots, precision editing, as well as masterly acting. Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman dominate the film with their performances. But I cannot comprehend what message Anderson is trying to convey through this story of the mystic and his acolyte. Aesthetically I think it is a successful film, and perhaps I need to see it again to ponder why Anderson chose this thinly veiled scientology parable for his latest opus. i cannot deny that there were many unforgettable images that occur throughout the film.
