Pitfall (1962) was the first film by director Hiroshi Teshigahara and the first collaboration between him and writer Kobo Abe and composer Toru Takemitsu--three more would follow. This film is part of Criterion's Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara (Pitfall / Woman in the Dunes / The Face of Another). It is an impressive debut with the interesting deep focus shots mingled with close ups and non traditional wipes and other visual motifs. There is some documentary footage of mines interspersed within the story which has elements of fantasy, horror, social realism, as well as being critical of capitalist society.
