Islands Of The Damned (2010) by R. V. Burgin is another memoir that inspired the HBO series The Pacific. Burgin was mentioned in W.B. Sledge's impressive biography With The Old Breed. I suspect it would be a good companion piece to Sledge's superior memoir in that they both fought in many of the same battles since they were in the same company/division. In fact, Burgin refers to Sledge's book and suggests that Sledge had been too hard on some people in his appraisals of their character. It is also Burgin's own story of what happened to him and his own interpretations of events that included some of the the bloodiest fighting in the Pacific War in places like Peleliu and Okinawa. However, if I were to recommend only one book about those experiences I would suggest Sledge's more comprehensive book, but for history buffs and enthusiasts this is a welcome addition to the history of the Pacific War.
