I've always liked the film adaptations of books by James M. Cain, so after seeing the HBO adaptation of Mildred Pierce, I decided to read one of his novels and started with The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934). It was a short book just 128 pages, but it was a compelling story told in the noir vernacular. Perhaps, Cain is not as adept with dialogue, but there is some skill in that regard as well. There was also something primal and lurid about the tragedy of Frank and Cora as well. It was an extremely entertaining version of LA noir and I expect to read his other classics, Double Indemnity and Mildred Pierce, in the future.
