I noticed that The Gaurd (2011), a film starring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, appeared on several best of the year film lists. It is a small Irish film that escaped my radar, however, I had the chance to see it on the plane. It was a very enjoyable film that was written and directed by playwright/director Martin McDonagh's brother John Michael McDonagh. Martin served as the film's producer, and Gleeson had previously starred in Martin McDonagh's film In Bruges. Furthermore, the soundtrack was composed by one of my favorite bands Calexico. I think it is an entertaining fish out of water story with some unexpected twists and turns. Gleeson in particular was impressive in the film set in West Ireland.
