I was headed downtown and was looking for a place ot eat lunch and came across this rave review for Bakeman's. It seems to be a downtown institution given the lines that started forming at noon. To be honest I wasn't completely blown away-I got the famous turkey sandwich which had fresh, cold cut turkey (ala leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches). But it was served on thinly sliced bread that disintegrated as you ate. The chili was hearty, but didn't have sour cream, cheese, or jalapeno peppers and, frankly, wasn't spicy at all. It was served fast and was inexpensive, but I won't go out of my way to eat there again.

I used to frequent Bakeman's when I worked in the area. It is cheap and the turkey is just like leftover turkey. The other appeal is the rudeness of the employees, especially when you do not know what you want. My first time there I got yelled at, ala Soup Nazi. Anyways, if you work downtown it is a good place for lunch. I would never send someone from out of town or rate it highly as a lunch spot( I would send you to wait in line at Salumi). I am glad you checked it out though.

Luckily I knew what I wanted before I ordered AND got there just before the lunch rush. If nothing else, an interesting experience.
