35 Shots of Rum (2010) is a film by Clare Denis that re-imagines Ozu's film Late Spring about the impending separation between a father and daughter as Parisian Afro-Caribbeans. I know from a video extra that Denis feels strong emotions about Ozu's father-daughter stories because Denis was raised by her father and felt great affection for him. She points out the influence of Ozu's film Late Spring on this one in a interview that is one of the DVD's extras. It is a very subtly told film that has a leisurely pace and is probably not for everyone. That being said there are some great performances and some great cinematography. It was heralded as one of the best films of 2010 and it is easy to see why.
