Winter's Bone is the Cannes Grand Jury Prize winning adaptation of a novel directed by Debra Granik. It is a very intense film in which Jennifer Lawrence holds the film together with her gritty performance as Ree Dolly, a 17 year-old who is basically taking care of two much younger siblings and her mother while her father is missing. It seems that he was arrested and put his house up for collateral for his bond and has been missing ever since. If he cannot be found then the house will be confiscated putting Ree and her family out into the wild since they are living in the treacherous Ozarks among methheads and meth labs. John Hawkes puts in a intimidating performance as Ree's uncle "Teardrop." This film is low budget, but very visceral in its depiction of the Ozark mountain people ravaged by the meth epidemic. One of the best films I've seen this year.
