The second title in the Eclipse 3: Late Films of Ozu collection is an atypical film for Ozu, Tokyo Twilight (1957). Once again he grapples with generational changes within a family, however this one tackles some controversial issues like abortion, separation and suicide. It is also the only film that takes place in winter. The locations are somewhat atypical as well since a lot of the action takes place in smoky mahjong parlors and Ginza bars. Skukichi (played by Ozu regular Chisu Ryu) has two troubled daughters. Takako (also played by Ozu regular Setsuko Hara), who has left her husband with her small child to live with her father and younger sister Akiko (Ineko Arima) who is a bit of wild child staying out late trying to track down her boyfriend Kenji. However, she has a fatalistic streak and things will not end well for her. I found the story extremely fascinating despite the critical response from his usual audience.
