Equinox Flower (1958) (from Eclipse Series 3: Late Ozu) was Yasujiro Ozu’s first color film and it is somewhat of a departure in theme. The focus is again on the generational rift between the traditional omiai (arranged marriages by the parents) and the their children’s desires to pick their own partners. The father is a hypocrite he thinks that what is good for his colleague’s daughter isn’t necessarily good for his own daughter. He tries to punish his daughter for making her own plans after he is tricked by her friend in giving his consent. Later, he reluctantly comes around. It is a subtle criticism of the old guard.
