I recently saw Steven Soderbergh’s Che: Part 2 and while it
was visually stunning, it wasn’t as compelling as Part 1. I think it has a lot
to do with the fact that it is pretty static aside from Che’s secret entry into
Bolivia-all of the film takes place in the Bolivian countryside and it is about
his demise, whereas the first part is about his ascendancy as a not only a socialist
hero, but as a cultural phenomena. I wonder if some heavy editing would have made
for a more satisfying film. One has to respect Soderbergh for doing film like this
and his other experimental films like The Girlfriend Experience. That being said he can be entertaining with more
conventional fare like Out Of Sight,
Sometimes he gets criticized for having an uneven oeuvre, that is much better
than having a predictable oeuvre.
