I’ve been a fan of Mike Leigh’s films for a quite some time. But Happy-Go-Lucky is unusual in light of his other films. His other films are dramatic about the problems of people trying to come to terms with contemporary life. There are people like that in this film, but the principal character, Poppy, has no such problems. She is a happy well-adjusted person who feels the need to help make life better for others from a morose shop assistant, to an abused child in her grade school class, and even her ill tempered driving school instructor who is most definitely stalking her. It’s another fascinating character study, strangely in some ways it reminds me of his last film Vera Drake-it was another film with a strong female lead that was trying to help others by giving illegal abortions to women in trouble.
