Tom Perotta’s latest novel The Abstinence Teacher takes on the culture war about sex education in America. He has the uncanny knack of making both characters seems real and believable in their convictions and actions. The fact that these characters seems completely at odds with one another, but actually have a lot in common as their background stories are revealed. It is sad how true to life the punishments of Ruth the Sex Ed teacher seem to be. In the litigious climate of American education teachers’ reputations can be destroyed easily by a vengeful student looking to get back at a teacher for some perceived slight by making up stories or reporting what they think is dubious. Perotta creates memorable characters and writes in a fluid manner that makes his books very easy to digest.
