Milk seems like Gus Van Sant’s most conventional film since Good Will Hunting. The film was well made and had several great acting performances from Sean Penn, James Franco, etc. However, that being said it seems somewhat unnecessary. Watching the film made me want to see the documentary that preceded it. It is a dramatic story, but I was more interested in the real world aspects of the story.

I saw that documentary just a couple of weeks ago. Watching it without any prior knowledge of him (apart from knowing there was this current film) was fascinating, especially the end - one of those stranger than fiction moments.

Whenever I watch a film (rather than documentary) version of history I get impatient to find out what really happened-rather than a "dramatized" version of reality.

I agree with you had no interest to see Milk, rather see the documentry as happened not long after I left San Francisco. Also feel the same on Frost-Nixon,W, etc;
