The Wrestler has lived up to its hype; it was an impressive film. It seems like such an odd choice for Darren Aronofsky to follow up this realistic look at a down on his luck professional wrestler to his un-impressive and surreal previous film, The Fountain. Mickey Rourke was amazing as Randy “The Ram” Robinson. Marisa Tomei was also great as the stripper love interest to the hero. It follows some dramatic traditions-it almost spookily reminds me of the plot the studio executive tells Barton Fink to write “you need a love interest or a sick child…” But the fact that there were a few surprises in store for me shows the mark of a great film. It also stayed with me long after the viewing as I evaluated why I liked it and why it made such an impression on me. I’m curious to see what Aranofsky’s next project will be.

I loved the movie too. Rourke was equal to the hype. However, the subplot with his daughter was a little hackneyed and underdeveloped, and Evan Rachel Wood wasn't a very good actress either. But the strengths of the film greatly outweighed the weaknesses.

The subplot was what I was referring to with the "sick child" being the estranged relationship between the Ram and his daughter. But I agree, a minor annoyance. The first half hour was awesome.
