I am a fan of the Gilmore Girls. OK I said it; I’ve also seen every episode of Sex and the City. I am a chick. I had heard good things about the Gilmore Girls, so I thought I’d give it a go. And Lauren Graham won me over. I had originally known her as the slutty Jewish bartender with the Santa fetish from Bad Santa, but she is much more than that. I was glad to see Chris Eigeman (known for his work with Walt Stillman 80s films like Metropolitan and Barcelona), get a chance to play Lorelei’s romantic interest for a season. Mad Men’s Jon Hamm even had a cameo, as did Adam Brody of the OC fame. As for the show, I also like the quick-witted dialogue sprinkled with cultural references. The show has great music; the final scene had a Might Lemon Drops song that I haven’t heard in something like 15 years (“Inside Out”). Sam Phillips provided most of the music as did Grant Lee Phillips as the town troubadour as did Dave “Gruber” Allen (of Freaks and Geeks fame as the hippie counselor Mr. Rosso). I liked the fact that class politics were often in the air as discussion over money, class, and entitlement were featured in several plot points. The small town full of wacky characters got a little old, but sometimes felt quite comforting.
