I really enjoyed the film adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel Little Children, which was smart, well executed without relying on stereotypes and clichés while taking a look at suburban America. The same can be said of his novel. I guess I was first interested in reading one of his novels, when I read that he wrote both Little Children and Election-from which two excellent films were made. His latest, The Abstinence Teacher also sounds quite intriguing. I have to say that the adaptation was pretty close to the original, but there was enough that was different that it made it an interesting study in what changes were made for the screen. The ending in particular was quite different and the novel had more scenes from the perspective of secondary characters and some scenes that were altered or deleted from the film. His original take on suburbia included interesting studies of stay-at-home Moms, a former-jock stay-at-home Dad, disgraced cop, and recently released sex offender...it's an intriguing and volatile mix. Perrotta's style is easy to read, but intelligent and challenging in the subtext.
