I recently read Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s most recent novella Memories Of My Melancholy Whores and really enjoyed it. Marquez still writes sparkling prose. It is the surprisingly touching story of a 90-year-old bachelor who finally finds love at the end of his life. On the eve of his 90th birthday He decides that he wants a virgin delivered to him to celebrate, He has been a life long patron of whores, but has never made this request. He doesn’t immediately sleep with the 14 year old girl and a surprising affair blossoms, and he reconsiders the women who have moved in and out of his life over the years as he contmeplates his current love affair. It’s Marquez’s first novel in 10 years and calls to mind another great love story by the author Love In The Time Of Cholera, which I believe was my first Marquez novel. It’s a short, but beautifully written novel showing that Marquez is still capable of spinning a remarkable yarn.
