Dude, let me know when you finish The Shield of Achilles (and blog about it!) I heard that book is awesome.

MC

I'm not sure I'll ever finish it, but I'll let you know when I post about it...

Re. Freakonomics--I just came across a letter to the editor in Reading Today (a publication for reading teachers) on this. I'll borrow the last few lines from the letter, which sums up what the letter was about: Freakonomics has many virtues. This error [the authors' claims that parents' reading aloud to their child does not predict the child's academic achievement], however, is serious, dismissing a practice that both readers and children enjoy and that has a powerful and positive influence on literacy development.

Even without my paranthetical explanation, now that I typed it, that last sentence seemed wordy and weak. But anyway. It was a timely coincidence that I happened to come across that.

MC

I don't think they're saying-don't read to your children-I think they are saying "statistically there's no correlation.

Luke

i thought the part about the kkk and the real estate agents was pretty intresting
