There's been a lot of press about the final season of HBO's acclaimed series Six Feet Under this year, and I have been trying to avoid reading anything about it since I have become a fan and can only catch up through DVDs, (but maybe it's high time to get a hard drive and start raiding Bit Torrent). I have finally caught up with Season 4 of Six Feet Under. As usual, the writing, production, acting, and cinematography are top notch. There are 5 audio commentaries that are interesting and informative. The cast interview with Bob Costas is decidedly not interesting or enlightening, other than a bit of information about the background of the main performers. The editing featurette is worthwhile as well. I particularly liked the episode "Parallel Play" that ends with the cast burning leftover items from a garage sale as Raidohead's song "Lucky" drones in the background-powerful stuff and the title is a great metaphor about emotional distance and personal pain. And this series deals with a lot of pain. Nate Fischer seems to be the Job of the series and I have a feeling that it doesn't get any better for him in the final season. The season ends quite dramatically with the episode "Untitled"-leaving a lot of room for new character development.
