I’ve been wanting to see Super Size Me after reading a lot about it, and saw half of it while on vacation this winter. I finally saw the rest of it and if Fast Food nation wasn’t enough to keep you away from fast food restaurants this will do it, but I think other factors have to be considered-mainly lack of exercise. A very entertaining look at a serious issue.
I have to say that I had high expectations for Garden State. They were not met, it had a great soundtrack and single out The Shins for praise and that is alone makes it a worthy film, but I found it a bit cloying, pretentious with calculated hipness much like that of Wes Anderson saying ”look at how alternative and whimsical I am.”
I (Heart) The Huckabees is not a usual film and it’s not what I would have expected from David O. Russel. It’s a sort of metaphysical comedy, which by default makes it pretentious and self important, even though by doing it as a comedy it is supposed to save itself form coming across as pretentious. I think the saving grace is that it could promote reflective thought among movie viewers about philosophical issues, but probably not. A bit too obscure, I’m sure it has it’s devoted followers though.
The Grudge was directed the original Japanese director Takeshi Shimazu, and I haven’t seen the original, but this one wasn’t scary at all. I enjoyed mocking the Japanese pronunciation of the main stars and trying to figure out the Tokyo locations used in the film. Pretty forgettable otherwise.
When Will I Be Loved is the latest offering from James Toback starring Neve Campbell-who we get to see naked and having sex a lot. It’s pretty lame as well. I think Toback made an interesting film looking at Black/White relations in Black And White. But this double cross woman’s empowerment can be seen as exploitive drivel as well.
