Tokyo-Bangkok In flight movies: The Forgotten-this was a sort of supernatural/SF thriller starring Julianne Moore. It was actually pretty entertaining in the B movie sense. It had effective cinematography that created a sense of gloom and doom. It’s one of those NY movies where everyone lives in a gorgeous brownstone or hip Art Deco style apartment. It’s not the type of movie that challenges or stays with you after seeing it, a popcorn movie if you will.
Friday Night Lights-this film has been getting a lot of positive press, and for good reason. It was well directed, had a compelling story, was well acted, and had some great cinematography. I have to say that after seeing it, I’m curious about the book, I think the drama could be drawn out more effectively in the print form, not to detract from one of the better sports films I’ve seen in some time. It lives up to the hype.
I started watching Sideways again, since it was such a great film and we had individual movie screens. However, the airline edited version was marred by overdubbing some of the funniest lines. However, it was still moving the second time around, there were some great performances in this film-probably my favorite of 2004.
Hey, Pat. One particular thing that I liked about The Forgotten was how the humans were physically abducted. Very cool. Oops, did I just spoil it for those who haven't seen it? Probably, but what the fuck. I really enjoyed Friday Night Lights as well. Haven't seen Sideways yet but it's on my short list. I think that New Releases have been a bit thin lately, but here are my recent picks:
The Last Life On Earth
Eulogy
Motorcycle Diaries
I "Heart" Huckabees
Deadwood (series)
Carnivale (series)
Donnie Darko - Director's Cut
I also just watched Wild Zero featuring Guitar Wolf. Great low budget zombie horror film with those crazy rockers from Japan. I am going to try to catch them next week at Chop Suey. I think Shonen Knife is also coming to town this month.

Hey Ray, I just got back from Bangkok/Hanoi so I've got over 30 uh..."discount" DVDs, so I'll be reviewing them in installments, but I did get Motorcycle Diaries, I Heart Huckabees-haven't seen either yet. I've been hearing a lof of good things about Deadwood-what did you think?
Have you seen Guitar Wolf before? It's been a while for me, but always entertaining garage roock-sort of been out of punk/garage for a while. But saw a punk show not long ago (Do you know Lagwagon? They're on Fat Wreckords) .

Cool...it's always interesting to check out the "discount" DVDs. Win some, lose some...right?
I'm hooked on Deadwood. I am blown away at the quality of shows that HBO continues to produce. This one is one of my favorites next to Sopranos. Believe it or not, I think they actually cuss more in Deadwood than the Sopranos.
Yeah, I saw Guitar Wolf at the Gibson House a while back. "Lock 'n' Loll!!!" Those guys are great. I haven't seen Lagwagon, but I've heard some of their CDs. From what I remember they sounded a lot like Face to Face and Bracket. Of course, I wouldn't doubt if any of these bands were related (shared lineup members). I just can't remember...I never totally got into that scene.
Got a visit from Jeff from Moral Crux last night. They released a CD on Panic Button/Lookout (Weasel) but I haven't heard it yet. He grew his hair out and looks like he should have played with the Ramones. Brilliant!
