I've often expressed dismay at the $90 melons. Here they are, apparently these ones with their perfect circular shape and stem attached make them valuable. It is a common gift during this time of the year. In the summer (ochugen) and in the winter (oseibo), it is a traditon to give presents to clients and customers as a way of promoting good will and maintaining good relations with people. Then again it begets the obligation of returning the gift.

that is awesome. I knew nothing of the melon fetish, and have never seen one with the stem attached. do you eat 'em, or just look at 'em?
