The Metropolis' feature story this week is on Donald Ritchie, one of my favorite Japanologists. He has a shrewd critical eye and has been here forever. I particullarly like his essays in which he has written about a variety of subjects. The Donald Ritchie Reader is a good overview of his work.

I read his book 'Tokyo' - at least I think that's what it was called - a few years ago now. I thought it was incredibly perceptive and intelligent. One of the most honest and accurate analyses of Tokyo I'd ever read.

I think he wrote the text to a picture book called Tokyo, but I haven't read it yet. I agree with your adjectives--perceptive and intelligent.
